My Northknits Story

From stressed
to success

I taught myself how to knit in college, loved it immediately, and was good at it. But for a long time, I felt a disconnected frustration — why didn't my patterns look as good as more experienced makers?

I figured out that the problem wasn't my hands or my ability to learn every knit technique. It was that I'd never stopped to notice what the fabric, the literal yarn loops, were actually doing.

This workbook is what I wish someone had handed me. It's a game changing mental shift that will immediately level up your knitting knowledge and skills!

Knitting in progress

the four modules

learn why your stitches are based on
structural engineered decisions.

Also includes: Quick Reference Card · Personal Swatch Log · Bonus Modules · Synthesis · Designer Fabric Cheat Sheet

Physics of the Stitch (pages 1–7)

In Module 1, you'll learn why stockinette curls, why ribbing bounces back, and why your bind-off changes the feel of an entire edge. The fabric is actively communicating, time to lean in and listen.

Canvas Mechanics (pages 7–14)

Stressed about flat versus circular knitting? In Module 2, you'll understand why these techniques produce measurably different surfaces. Discover what your tool choice is doing to your fabric before you've finished a single row, eliminate that annoying tension panic.

Tool Friction (pages 15–21)

In Module 3, you'll learn why our knitting needles are not just passive vehicles. They are a dynamic friction surface. Explore how material, taper, and finish calibrate your gauge in ways tension alone never could.

Life Cycle of the Loop (pages 22–28)

Wondering exactly why your raw knitting is not your finished knitting? In Module 4, we'll level up and see why more experienced designers draft for what the fabric becomes after water, steam, and air, not what it looks like on the needles.
